YOU WILL NEED:

  •          3 sweet onions (should be about 3 cups), sliced thin or diced (we love using red onions but sweet white onions work well too)
  •          ¾ cup water
  •          3 tablespoons butter

DIRECTIONS:

  1.     In a large pot, heat the butter until melted and slightly shimmering. Add the onions and cook over moderately high heat, stirring occasionally, until golden brown, about 10 to 15 minutes. 
  2.     Add the contents of your pouch to the onions and cook over low heat, stirring a few times, until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Increase the heat to high and cook, without stirring, until an amber-brown caramel forms, about 6 minutes. Stir in the water and simmer over low heat, stirring a few times, until the jam is thick about 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool slightly. Serve on top of your burgers.

Make-Ahead! The caramelized onion jam can be refrigerated for up to 5 days. Serve warm or at room temperature.
